Barking Up the Right Tree

Succasunna, NJ…A custom home renovation project managed by Spectrum Construction & Development Co., Inc. is leading the way when it comes to the green building movement in the state of New Jersey.  It is the first in the state to have environmentally friendly bark siding.  The lake front home in Sparta is the inspiration of the owner Jo Ann Jany who first came up with the idea of using Bark House shingles, a product of Highland Craftsmen.  The shingles perfectly compliment the rustic craftsman style of the Jany home and are in keeping with the green building design elements being used throughout.

Highland Craftsmen a “green forest product manufacturer” is based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.  The yellow poplar bark is a by product of the logging industry.  It’s harvested from indigenous, local trees and the manufacturing process utilizes a minimum amount of energy, primarily man-power, and no chemical toxins.  The shingles are never chemically treated, require little or no maintenance, and can last up to 80 years!

Green products like Bark House siding are becoming more important to today’s informed consumers.   “Our customers are very well aware of green building products and design”, says Don Dyrness, President of Spectrum Construction & Development based in Succasunna, New Jersey.

“By taking a ‘green’ approach to building homes we’re more focused on energy efficiency and the sustainability of the products we use.  Don recently completed the Certified Green Professional certification sponsored by the NAHB National Association of Home Builders.
