Builder Designation Lends Credibility
Professional
development is not necessarily the first thing that comes to a builder’s mind
these days. In a changing, highly
competitive housing market most construction companies are more concerned about
sales and the day to day challenges of managing their business. Don Dyrness, President of Spectrum
Construction & Development Co., however, decided that this was the perfect
time to complete the work on his Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)
designation. The designation identifies
him as one of the building industry’s top professionals. Administered by the National Association of
Home Builders (NAHB)
“It
took some extra effort on my part to put aside the time to completing the
course, but I think it’s important in establishing Spectrum as full service
construction company - a cut above the average residential home builder and
remodeler”, says Don. “The Certified
Graduate Builder designation shows that we are committed to learning about the
latest trends in our industry and have been recognized for being experts in our
field. It gives us credibility in the
consumers mind, a marketing advantage.”
Don also recently completed the Certified Green Professional course
being offered by the CBANJ.
Certified
Graduate Builders earn the building industry’s premier professional designation
by completing an intensive series of nine six hour courses. The CGB curriculum
incorporates training by leading building industry practitioners and academics
on a range of topics including business management, emerging technologies and
market trends. After earning CGB
credentials, program graduates are required to maintain their designation by
completing twelve hours of continuing education every three years. Participating in programs offered by the NAHB
like Builder 20, symposiums, trade shows and classes helps Dyrness to
continually develop his professional skills and produce a better product.
Don
is a life-long resident of Succasunna, New Jersey and founded Spectrum
Construction & Development Co., Inc. with his father Dan Dyrness in
1989. Spectrum specializes in designing
and building custom single family homes, major additions/renovations and light
commercial projects. Their most current
project is 109 Main Street in Succasunna.
The 108 year old house and barn are being renovated for use as
professional office suites. The historic
design details of the house and barn will be maintained using low maintenance,
energy efficient materials. The 109 Main
Street office suites are the keystone to the township Main Street Improvement
Plan.
“It’s
exciting to be the catalyst for the Main Street Improvement project. We just completed the new curbing and brick
lined walkway and it looks great – what a difference!” says Don. “Soon we will install the vintage-style
street lights, which are also part of the design criteria set forth by the
town’s plan for Main Street. I’ve always
thought Main Street had lots of potential. As a matter of fact, in 1981 I
installed a paver walkway in front of the library’s gazebo for my Boy Scout
Eagle project!”
Don is the third generation of the
Dyrness family to be involved in the construction industry. He is a Roxbury High School graduate and has
a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. In addition to being an Eagle Scout, Don is
the Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop #163. He is an active member in a Builder 20 Club,
a nationwide group of custom home builders.
