Spectrum Receives Top Honors at Community Builders & Remodelers Association

Awards of Excellence

Succasunna Builder Wins in Three Categories

Succasunna, NJ— Spectrum Construction & Development Co., Inc. received 3 first place awards in the 2010 Awards of Excellence sponsored by the Community Builders & Remodelers Association of New Jersey (CBRANJ).  The gala awards event was held on June 10, 2007 at the Parsippany Sheraton hotel.  Spectrum received two awards for projects in Best Residential Addition or Alteration category and top honors in the Best Historic Renovation for their 109 Main Street Office Building.  The CBRANJ Award of Excellence is an especially significant honor because builders are judged by their peers as the best in the industry.  From the homeowner’s point of view, it is also a seal of approval.

“We’re very pleased to receive awards in a variety of categories”, said Don Dyrness, President of Spectrum Construction and Development Company, who accepted the awards at the CBRANJ event.  “It recognizes not only the quality of our work, but our versatility – big, small, residential, commercial or historic, we work hard to build the finest quality product.”

Spectrum received the Best Historic Renovation for the 109 Main Street Office Building.  Built in 1900 it was designed and constructed as an office and family residence for the only practicing physician in Succasunna, New Jersey.  The property also included a carriage house, originally used to house the family horse, carriage and feed.

“The building captured our attention because of its prominent, highly visible location and inherent charm,” says Don Dyrness.  “The challenge was to keep the turn-of-the-century design details that give it a unique character and make it viable as a 21st century office space.  Inside, we tore out most everything except the structural framing,” continued Don.  “A new open floor plan, coupled with the existing high nine foot ceilings, dramatically changed the interior space.”

The redesigned interior is much more accommodating to the office space needs of today’s professionals.   Other upgrades and amenities include barrier free restrooms and entryways, along with energy efficient mechanical systems.  Throughout the process, the Spectrum team never lost sight of their goal to keep the charm of 109 Main Street intact.  The original porch, entry doors, main stair rail, first floor fireplace mantel and surround were all restored.

In the CBRANJ’s Best Residential Addition/ Alteration category ($150,000-$250,000), Spectrum won for the the Buldiger residence located in Succasunna, NJ.   Spectrum built the original house in 1996 and when Sue Buldiger needed to care for her aging parents, she turned again to Spectrum Construction.   She trusted in their expertise to design and build a multi-generational addition that would accommodate the needs of her parents, and include all the custom design details and quality construction that she enjoys in her present home.

The completed parent’s suite includes a new bedroom, bath and kitchenette.  The bath is barrier free and features a wheelchair accessible shower.  The existing house was modified to seamlessly incorporate the new space by increasing the shared family room and adding a new laundry room and foyer.  Changes to the exterior of the home include a barrier free covered entrance and a new porch off the family room.  New front entryway doors, garage door and cultured stone add interest to the front elevation of the home.

Also a winner in the Residential Addition / Alteration category ($ 50,000) was a residence in Sparta. The goal was to enhance the exterior of the home while correcting some major repair problems.  Spectrum designed a new front dormer and porch.  A pergola, complete with lanterns to light the front walk, is a custom design handcrafted by Spectrum’s Dan Dyrness.  It completes the new, more appealing cottage-like style of the renovated home.

Spectrum Construction & Development Co., Inc. was established in June of 1989.  It’s a family business, owned and operated by father and son, Dan and Don Dyrness, both long time residents of Succasunna, New Jersey.  Spectrum specializes in designing and building custom single family homes, additions/renovations and light commercial projects.

Spectrum has set itself apart from other builders by offering a high degree of professionalism and personal service to its customers.  Their projects are characterized by distinctive design, attention to detail and quality craftsmanship.  Don Dyrness has earned both a Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) designation and the Certified Green Professional (CGP) designation from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) University of Housing.  The CGB program is sponsored locally by the Community Builders & Remodelers Association of New Jersey (CBRANJ).  Spectrum has earned top honors at from the CBRANJ Awards of Excellence for the past 20 years.
